Building a U.S. coin collection that holds up

Decide whether you're chasing a date-and-mint set, a type set, or simply coins that appeal to you — each approach has a different budget and pace.
Common-date Morgan and Peace dollars are a forgiving way to learn to grade silver dollars before spending on key dates.
Full strike and original surfaces matter more on some series (Mercury dimes, Walking Liberty halves) than raw grade alone.
Certified examples make sense for key dates and higher grades; raw coins are often the better value for common dates in circulated condition.
