Buying Coins and Precious Metals, Done Plainly

Mount Pleasant Coin sells two related but different things: collectible coins and currency valued for rarity and condition, and precious metals bullion valued primarily by weight and purity. Knowing which one you're after makes every decision after that easier.

Two ways to buy

Collectible coins vs. precious metals

Both are worthwhile, and many customers end up doing a bit of both. The distinction is really about what drives the price.

Collectible coins & currency

Rarity, date, mint mark, grade, and eye appeal set the price here — sometimes far above the metal a coin is made of. This is the world of Morgan dollars, early gold type coins, certified rarities, and paper currency.

Precious metals bullion

Gold, silver, and platinum bullion trade close to the metal's spot price plus a modest premium for minting, form, and dealer cost. This is the world of Eagles, Maples, bars, and 90% junk silver.

Pricing

How our pricing and spreads work

We're glad to explain pricing before you buy anything — no one should feel like the number appeared out of thin air.

Bullion follows the spot market

Gold, silver, and platinum bullion prices track the live spot price of the metal, plus a premium. That premium covers minting costs, the coin or bar's form, and a fair margin for us to keep the shop running. Government-minted coins like American Eagles typically carry a higher premium than generic rounds or large bars, simply because they cost more to produce and are easier to resell.

Collectible coins are priced on the coin itself

For rare or collectible coins, metal content is often the least important factor. Grade, rarity, demand, and third-party certification (NGC, PCGS, PMG) matter far more. We price these based on current market activity for that specific coin and grade, not a formula — and we'll tell you why a coin costs what it does.

What to expect

How buying works, step by step

  1. 01

    Tell us what you're after

Call, stop by, or send a sourcing request. Whether it's a specific date, a type of bullion, or 'just something to start with,' we can point you the right direction.

  2. 02

    We show you real options

In the shop you'll see the coin or bullion in hand, not a photo. We'll walk through condition, weight, and any premium above metal value so the price makes sense.

  3. 03

Ask as many questions as you want

We'd rather you understand what you're buying than rush a sale. That includes grading, storage, and how a piece might fit a collection or a metals position.

  4. 04

    Pay and take it home

No pressure to add on, no gimmicks. Straightforward payment, a receipt, and guidance on how to store or insure what you've bought if you'd like it.
